The hired transport, ‘Spain’, was owned by The National Line. In 1879 she was hired by the Government to transport reinforcements to South Africa. ‘Spain’ departed Southampton on 27 Feb 1879 with half of the 1st dragoon Guards (13 officers, 311 men & 267 horses.) She arrived at Natal where she disembarked her passengers on 9 Apr 1879.
