Served throughout the Russian war in the Black Sea; was present at the attack on Sebastopol, 17th October, 1854 (Crimean and Turkish Medals, Sebastopol Clasp)
29 Nov 1856 Promoted to Mate/Sub-Lieutenant
29 Nov 1856 Mate on HMS Conqueror (Screw Steam Ship, Mediterranean)
17 Nov 1858 Mate on HMS Royal Albert (Screw Steam Ship, Flag Ship, Channel Squadron)
19 May 1859 Promoted to Lieutenant
8 Jul 1859 Lieutenant on HMS Sidon (Paddle Wheel Steam Frigate, Cape of Good Hope)
13 May 1862 Lieutenant, additional for disposal, on HMS Forte (Frigate, Flag Ship, South East Coast of America)
18 Jul 1862 Lieutenant on HMS Satellite (Corvette, South East Coast of America)
15 Nov 1865 Lieutenant on HMS Malacca (Corvette, Pacific) Kinahan Islands, British Columbia were named in 1867 by Captain Pender, after first lieutenant Richard G. Kinahan

9 Aug 1877 Promoted to Captain
21 Mar 1879 Captain on HMS Orontes (Troopship) during the Zulu War. Delivered drafts for several battalions at Natal, on 4 June 1879. Received body of Prince Imperial from HMS Boadicea at Simon’s Bay and transported his body to England. At Spithead Captain Kinahan was one of 4 pallbearers from Orontes when the Prince’s body was transferred. (South Africa Medal, no clasp)

1911 Died in London at age 74
