Born 4 Dec. 1859; m 1893, Edith Blanche, d of Rev. William Dyson; died 5 March 1925
Deputy Keeper of the Privy Purse since 1922; Assistant Treasurer to the King, 1920; Secretary HM Privy Purse, 1918–22; served on HM Yacht Victoria and Albert
Clerk of Shah during engagement with Peruvian turret-ship Huascar, 1877; served Zulu War, 1879 (medal and clasp); Egyptian War, 1882 (medal, clasp, Khedive’s bronze star, 5th class Medjidie); Souakim, 1884 (clasp); European War, 1914–17 (KCB)
On the occasion of King George V's coronation he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 19 June, 1911.
He was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Civil Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 1st January, 1918"

John Henry George Chapple was a Clerk on HMS Shah. Landed with the Naval brigade from that ship. He served with the Eshowe Relief column and was at the Battle of Gingindlovu. During the second phase of the war he accompanied the naval brigade to Port Durnford. Chapple served ashore from 7 Mar '79 to 21 Jul '79. Awarded the South Africa Medal with clasp “1879”. Confirmed on the Medal Roll
