| Hi All, What would be your top 20 recommended publications on the Zulu War??? I approach this from an historical and reference angle. My reference interest would be particually towards weapons, uniforms and equipment. Aswell as Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift I would also like to read up on conflicts prior and post these engagements. Thanks for your time and help. cheers Richie

| How can men die better by Colonel Mike Snook
Zulu Rising by Ian Knight
The Heroism and tragady of the Zulu war 1879 by Saul David
These are the best books in regards to the battles.

| Richie You will undoubtably get a list of the popularist books.
My list would include: Rope of Sand by Prof Laband In Zululand throughout the war of 1879. Norris Newman Moodies Zulu War DCF Moodie The Red Soldier Frank Emery Through the Zulu Country Bertram Midford The Road to Isandlwana Phillip Gon Field Guge to the war in Zululand Thompson and Laband. The big Silver book Isandlwana by ian Knight. Zulu Victory Lock and Quantrill HCMDB Col Mike Snook With his Face to the Foe Ian Knight Jackson Whybra Any and All of the Anglo Zulu war society Volumes ( talk to 90th hes allways aware of them)
Read that lot and you will be as confused as the rest of us.
Welcome to the Forum
Regards
After that take your choice |

| The list could be very long, but the availability and price plays a part in decision-making. I've had to forego many of the older books for that reason, although thankfully, some are being reprinted before getting lost in future history. More recent books would be Zulu Victory and How Can Man Die Better for me, as with them being released near to one another, as well as comparing against each other, caused a massive amount of debate on forums. I don't necessarily agree with some of the contents in either of them. Zulu Rising I guess, as it is very recent, and I consider could be one of the last detailed books on Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. Osprey titles have excellent colour plates. I must recommend Ian Knight's older silver book Zulu: Isandlwana & Rorke's Drift, by Windrow and Green, the colour plates are great, the one of Durnford absolutely outstanding! A Soldier's Life And Work. by Edward Durnford is essential reading if interested in Anthony, as is Droogleever's book, but these could be surpassed by the new Col. Durnford biography released next year. Still need to get the former two though. |

| Hi Colin & Dave, Thank you for the info. and your time to post. I have now put a small spread sheet together with the 30 books now I am going to look at purchasing based on the response I have had. I already bought James Bancroft's - Rorke's Drift and Ian Knight's -Brave Mens Blood, I could not put these down and really enjoyed both. I also have Osprey's Volunteers, Irregulars and Auxiliaries and have just got the Noble 24th, waiting for this one to arrive. I do agree that cost may be a factor as some publications are £40/£60 each that I have seen. Might tap Santa for these. cheers lads and thanks again. Richie
