Of the six senior officers who were part of “Boadicea’s” contingent to the Naval Brigade during the Zulu War, all six suffered misfortune or tragedy in the following years.

Commodore Richard’s wife died mysteriously at Simon’s Bay in June, 1880.

Commander Romilly was killed at the Battle of Majuba Hill in 1881.

Lieutenant Carr promoted to Commander in November, 1879. Promotion cancelled without explanation in 1880.

Lieutenant Benett died at Haslar Hospital in Aug 1880, from illness contracted during the Zulu War.

Lieutenant Hobkirk placed in hospital for insane in 1886.

Lieutenant Preedy lost a son, who died at 2months old, in 1894.

Then there was the matter of the smallpox epidemic that claimed the lives of a dozen of her crew in January and February, 1879.

Hi all

Yes in the nineteenth century, whatever the country or place is conflict, and it's even worse in the colonial wars that take place in hot countries, it's incredible mass of guys who die in combat without being killed or wounded in battle.

Quel gaspillage de vies...

But I bet that the Zulu were less affected by the epidemic in Europe, for cons for their wounded in combat, the% of deaths had to be high ...

Cheers

Pascal

Hi 90th

Yes, I have to agree with you there mate, very interesting.

P.O. Tom

Do you have anymore on this or other ships, or do you know of any links on the web that have any information about this sort of thing?

Martin,

The only information which I can add regarding H. M.S. Boadicea is that there appears to have been more deaths among her crew during her commission (1878-82) than there were on the other ships for which I could find a record.

The memorial for HMS Boadicea at Portsmouth lists 36 names, plus 11 un-named Kroomen, who died during her commission. That is 47 deaths. HMS Shah for the period 1877-79 lists 24 names on their memorial, and HMS Active, for the same time period, lists only 13 names. Relying on the medical journals for HMS Tenedos, I could find only 1 recorded death for the period 1878-79. That is a total of 38 deaths for the last three ships.

As for later incidents occurring among the other ship’s contingents to the Naval Brigade, there is no comparison.

HMS Active had 11 officers serving in ashore in the Zulu War. Midshipman Coker died at Eshowe from fever and dysentery. The rest lived into the 20th century.

HMS Tenedos had 3 officers ashore. Lt. Kingscote died in 1891 at age 44. The others lived long lives.

HMS Shah had 16 officers serving ashore, of which only 2 died early in life; Lt. Abbott in 1886 at age 32, and Surgeon Connell in 1883 at age 27. The majority of the others survived into the 20th century.

I’m not aware of any links on the web that would have similar type of information regarding the Royal Navy and the Zulu War.

Was the curse on the ship, or the name

To the memory of those lost on 13th June 1944, when HMS “Boadicea” was sunk by an enemy aerial torpedo off Portland Bill, having taken part in the Operation Neptune, the Royal Navy part in the Normandy Landings. There were only twelve survivors, as she sank within minutes.

“Boadicea” saw action at an early stage of the war in late 1939 in the Channel. In February 1940 she carried Winston Churchill from Boulogne to Dover. In June of that year she suffered severe damage and losses in the attempt to rescue the remaining troops of the 51st Highland Division from Le Havre and Dieppe. After repairs she then was involved in hunting the “Scharnhorst” and went on to the Russian convoys.

Later she escorted the RMS “Queen Elizabeth” on Atlantic crossings. From there she moved in October 1942 to the North Africa landings “Operation Torch” rescuing 425 survivors from the sinking of RMS “Viceroy Of India”. After more Russian convoys she moved to West Africa for other convoy work, rescuing survivors of MVS “Incomati”, then returning to Russia again.

In the Spring of 1944 she was moved to the Channel to prepare for “Operation Neptune”. On 6th June 1944 she escorted 31 tank landing craft of the 8th Armoured Brigade, the first main battle tanks to land, those of B and C Squadrons of the 4/7 Dragoon Guards. On 13th June she was returning to England for more escort duties, when she was attacked by a single German aircraft.
