This post 1879 sepia print shows the stone cairn monument erected in memory of the men of the Natal Carbineers killed at Isandlwana.
The road over the nek can be seen in the backgrond with the mountain behind that. Although the photo is undated, it is thought to have been taken at the time of the "Queens Cross" expedition.

The original photo is in the archives at the Natal Museum.
It is, I believe dated as September 1879 and is one of three cairns erected by Brevet Major CJBromhead. The others are the Younghusband Cairn on the mountain slopes and one on the site of the 1/24th camp. This one stands on the nek/saddle.

Regards

90th Perhaps, they were referring to those British soldiers that remained at Isandlwana. Those that left. Did not take part in the Battle.

DB. That's my opinion. Those that stayed, fought and died, were in the Battle Of Isandlwana.

Those that left were just there. Salute

The permanent memorial which now replaces this was designed by the Architect, Percy Jackson. Percy was the brother of Fred Jackson, one of the Carbineers killed at Isandlwana.
