| Hi Littlehand . Sorry mate couldnt make much sense of that so thought I'd post this for others who may be interested , this from ' The Noble 24th ' by Norman Holme . Hicken , William Henry . 25B / 747 Private . Correct name appears to be Hickin . Born at Hanley , Stoke - on - Trent , Staffordshire ( not confirmed by original documentary sources ). Enlisted 5 / 1 / 76 . Joined 1 / 24th South Africa 2 / 8 / 77 . In the now derelict church of St John at Hanley there is a large stained glass memorial window with the inscription ; ' To the glory of God and the memory of William Henry Hickin , 24th Regiment who fell at Isandlwana , South Africa , 22nd January 1879 , aged 25 years '. The future of this church is uncertain and the exterior of the window is now bricked over ( Information provided by Messrs. K.Roy and R.Smith ) . Effects recorded for claim by next - of - kin . South Africa Medal with Clasp 1877-78-79 . I know I often flog this book but for what you can get it for you'd be crazy not to have it , here is a link . http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Collectables-/1/i.html?_sop=1&_nkw=the+noble+24th Cheers 90th. PS. Does anyone live near the church mentioned ? , if so is it still standing ? And are you able to take a photograph of the Bricked over Window ? . |

| HI 90th
There are photos of both the window & family headstone in the graves section. I managed to visit the church a couple of years ago but unfortunately it's redundant & therefore not normally open. I did hear a while ago that the building was going to be converted into a restaurant or something but not sure if that's still the case.
Regards,
Tim |
