Zulu War Medal 1879 with one bar: 1879
Named: "Shah" M. Douglas A.B.
On hearing the news of the disaster of Isandhlwana the Captain of HMS Shah took it upon himself to return to the Cape and offer assistance. Before they arrived in South Africa they engaged a Peruvian vessel. Men from HMS Shah served on shore during the Zulu campaign.
"HMS Shah" has been added as is common with all medals issued to this ship.

Michael Douglas, Able Seaman on HMS Shah. He served with the “Shah’s” contingent to the Naval Brigade which landed on March 7 1879, and he is entitled to the South Africa Medal, with clasp “1879”. His medal was sent to him on 23 September, 1881 while he was serving on HMS Brittania.

The 1881 census shows Michael Douglas, A.B., date of birth about 1851, born in Middleton, County Cork serving on HMS Brittania at Dartmouth.

The National Archives record for naval seaman has Michael Douglas, date of birth 03-01-1851 (3 Jan 1851), place of birth: Middleton, County Cork, entered Royal Navy 05 February 1866, Official Number: 54587; later issued Continuous Service Number 35968A.
