In May, 1880 at the annual meeting of the National Temperance League, it was announced that 14 sailors of “Active,” “Shah,” and “Tenedos” had received medals for “keeping the pledge” all during the Zulu War. The medal bore a special clasp, “Zulu Campaign,” across the ribbon.
One of the recipients was boatswain’s mate George Hope of H.M.S. Shah
