"John James Burrow was born 1 January 1854 in Landport, Portsmouth, Hampshire a Labourer he entered the Royal Navy 29 December 1875 aboard HMS Asia as a Stoker 2nd Class, Burrow joined HMS Shah 14 August 1876 where he was rated Stoker 1 December 1876, Excellent 1 January 1880, HMS Asia 5 September 1882, where he was advanced to Leading Stoker 10 October 1882, HMS Northampton 21 November 1882 where he was advanced to Acting Chief Stoker 23 October 1885, and Chief Stoker 26 October 1886.

Burrows joined HMS Imperieuse 1 March 1888, HMS Asia 29 March 1891, HMS Nelson 10 October 1893, Victory II 17 October 1893 and HMS Ramillies 1 October 1895. Discharged to pension 31 December 1895, also awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal whilst aboard HMS Northampton."
