| The number 14 you have as T Daw could very well be James Marshall, source 'Defenders of Ilkeston by MK Kirby", as Kris Wheatley was highly involved in assisting that publication I would suspect that she could have had something to do with that identification.

| Here's another attempt to name names - not by me I might add. Some agree with Xhosa's, some do not. What do people think?

| Steve,
The photograph you have posted is somewhat odd, as some of the writing on it is mine, but someone - and I have an idea who that was - has added other names and appears to have attempted to copy my scrawl. Saxby [sic]; Jobbins; Chard; Pitt; Hayes and Pip the Dog are not in my hand.

| Steve,
No put it back up it has appeared on here before.
Les,
It would be easier for me to point out things if you posted the photograph on the site, because you've got names on there who were back in the U.K. when that photograph was taken Allan & Hitch leap out to me. Plus you have managed to solve the Bob Head riddle!
10 is certainly Windridge as he was a twin, and his niece let me see a photograph of her father. 19 is certainly not Roy of the 1st/24th, my subsequent research points to that being Alfred Henry Hook, as the same man appears in G Company 2nd/24th photograph taken at the same location. Minehan is the long-service soldier below your number 7.

Toby Giese the men of the 24th page 50-51. Bonsoir Xhosa, No it's a other "source" (not primary)! It seems to me it's a post of a priest in another forum (i don't have this message at hand). Kind regard. Frédéric |

| 24th your post got me thinking! yes the image is clear, trouble is i cant remember where i got it from..its back in my bucket with the text, some of which i wrote..it was made for my scrap -book, in which i make, very clear that it was not ever intended for publication and was a private en- deavor..point being i mentioned the guise book, but it certainly did not come from there, where all the illustration's are in the main pretty poor!. |

| Chatting to Kris Wheatley about this photo, some time back she had a message giving names to a lot of the defenders. It subsequently turned out that the author of the letter was a tad......strange. He put down his identification of individuals to weird and wonderful things, almost meta physical. Consequently things like Caleb Wood are incorrect.

| Hi Les . The picture you posted on photobucket of the RD Defenders is the one which has been acknowledged as being taken in Pinetown toward the end of the war , or War's end . I've seen it in several books Cheers 90th |

| You have to be more accurate than that - the 2/24th left PMB on 21 October 1879 for the march to Port Natal with a brief stay at Pinetown. So the photograph at Pinetown could have been taken 22-25 October. Remember defenders from 1/24th and those hospitalised would have departed Port Natal on 27 August 1879 aboard the transport Egypt (or earlier) so are not in the group photograph. |
