James Shackleford aka Richard William Bradshaw Empty
PostSubject: James Shackleford aka Richard William Bradshaw   James Shackleford aka Richard William Bradshaw EmptyFri Aug 08, 2014 8:05 am

James Shackleford was born in Chertsey, Surrey in 1829. He was in the Royal Navy (Census 1861) and then possibly joined the army (only  a basic file exists) before appearing in Kerikeri, New Zealand in 1905 using the name Richard William Bradshaw. When he died in 1918 local people wanted to erect a memorial to him as a Crimean war veteran. Newspapers also said he had fought in the Zulu War.  It looks like he was pretending to be the Bradshaw who did fight in the Zulu war. My question is - has anyone come across James Shackleford? Possibly he served with Bradshaw at some stage? Just a wild stab in the dark here...thanks for any help.
