Film Zulu Quote:Lieutenant John Chard: The army doesn't like more than one disaster in a day. Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead: Looks bad in the newspapers and upsets civilians at their breakfast..

Having just acquired another group undertaking the course at Hythe, I thought I'd throw it open to the forum to assist in identifying a 24th officer in the group:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Hythe group circa 1875 John Young Collection.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Close-up on 24th Officer, Hythe group circa 1875 John Young Collection.
I'm giving an approximate date of 1875, as some of the officers are wearing cap details introduced in the 1874 Dress Reg's, and there is a mixture of Martini-Henrys and Sniders in the group.
Any thoughts?

John If you could zoom in on the rifle clearing rods, they do appear to be the approved 1876 (23.6.76) pattern or the 1876 converted 1873 pattern (29.2.76), so I'd opt for 1876-78.

A guess. Lt. Quentin McKinnon Logan 2/24th, was with Chelmsford on 22nd. Letter home published in Red Soldier. Instructor of Musketry 1880.

Frederic,
My gut-feeling is it is Lieutenant Herbert Michael Williams, 2nd Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment.
Williams served as the Instructor of Musketry for the 2nd/24th from 4th May 1876 until 22nd January 1879, promoted to Captain 23rd January 1879.
If you know the well-known group photograph of the officers of 2nd/24th taken in India in 1872, Williams is seated at the right of the picture in a chair holding a cane in his left hand.
Regards,
John Y.

Bonsoir Mister YOUNG, Thank you for your answer. I know the photo of the officers of 2nd/24th taken in India in 1871(?)-1872 (from memory there is 2 photographies of the same group of officers / Bannister, Younghusband, Pulleine, Penn-Symons, Pope, Erksine, Sugden, Church...).
Cordialement Frédéric

Les,
The last two aren't relevant - wrong battalion - 1st/24th.
Impi,
I take it that it is too much to hope for true rhetoric from you?

Yes JY, i'm fully aware of that, and have been for many many years.. my point was to put them all up together so that people could see both Battalions together, and see who else they could spot. can see now i am just muddying the water so to speak, my apology's, i was going to throw the ' war council ' up as well but of course i will not bother..i bought 20gb of photobucket image time today, and i'm afraid it went to my head..
