If I've read his record of service correctly he arrived in Sth Africa well after the battle of Ulundi . August once you factor in the traveling time ! .

Your right it says the 19th July - 7th October 1879.

The Honourable Edward Cornish Poole ? Regimental Sergeant Major?

His papers say he was a labourer when he enlisted, he was imprisoned for desertion, and he never rose above the rank of Corporal!

Fishy or what?

The 'From' date is the date he departed UK not the date he arrived in South Africa.
