Hi All
There is a well researched book on R.D hitting the stalls soon , hopefully to be released sooner than later , once again I've called on my mate
' Graves1879 ' to post the cover photo for the Forum due to my ineptitude , and complete lack of idea how to do so ! .

I jumped straight in there when Neil mentioned his book last week, I collard him for a signed copy which he has very kindly agreed to do. I can't wait to read it and I wish him all the very best with his new book.

I know that Neil Thornton is a member of this forum but I never read something on the Zulu war from him (see no offense).
Does someone know his work (essays...)?

Agreed Frank , Fairly certain Neil has found some new material which may , or may not have been discussed on Ian Knight's F/B page , I tend to think he may have found some other evidence re the positioning of the defenders , I'm not sure if I have that right though ? . Time will tell , I don't expect Neil to do so , we'll need to buy his book to find out won't we ! Joker

For those wanting more information on Neil Thornton's RD Book this is what I have so far , cost is 20 GBP's , Hard Cover , the pages are Gloss finish with intergrated illustrations , as opposed to grouping them all in the centre of the book , the Author has worked with the Cover Artist Simon Smith devising coloured 3d images showing the different stages of the battle .

I was thinking that compared to other military subjects, the Anglo Zulu War isn't as popular to study as WW2, the American Civil war or even the Napoleonic war, which means that those that do read about the Anglo Zulu War are normally well informed and very knowledgeable., it is after all a very niche market. It was with these thoughts in mind that I realised that it takes a certain amount of courage to put pen to paper and publish a book which will forever be associated with the name of the author. The amount of time and effort that it takes to research a subject, the hard work it must take to cross reference everything and the number of records and archives that have to be sifted through must also take considerable concentration and focus, even if it is a labour of love, it will be time consuming.
I take my hat off to anyone that writes a book, especially a book that challenges long held beliefs or indeed attempts to shed new light on a subject. We, the lucky readers get to sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour without having to lift a finger. The AZW is a fascinating subject and we are lucky that we have historians who go that extra mile in helping us understand this period of history better. Very Happy

A bit more information on what to expect:

Like most of us on this forum I am fascinated by the small details of the battle. Upon reading books on the matter I noticed numerous discrepancies from book to book (or author to author). These discrepancies ranged from small things (which are just as important in nailing if we are to have an accurate understanding of events) to larger aspects of the battle.

One of these larger aspects is what happened in the hospital. I believe I have nailed beyond doubt that what has been written previously regarding a major part of the action is in fact incorrect. My narrative of that episode differs immensely from previous works and as such I devote an entire chapter (towards the end of the book and after the 'main narrative') to explain the evidence and sources behind my theory. It is 'water-tight'. I must add that it is not at all controversial, just 'different' and in my opinion even more intriguing that what is common belief.

I'll try to answer any questions. Once the book is on the shelves I will of course be more than happy to discuss anything within.

He may be contributing to my next one though as it is based on MP's in WW1, hence the publisher posted the photo.
