Lt.-Colonel Arthur Harness was out with Chelmsford on that fateful day at Isandlwana. Here is a transcript of a memo he wrote later on:
P. Maritzburg, Natal Sept. 20, 1879
I certify that the unusual amount shewn as credit in this pay list is due to the Battery having been on Active Service in the field during the Quarter, and the men not having therefore been paid regularly.
