| I have just purchased Companion to the Anglo- Zulu War by Ian Knight.
Like I have mentioned before I do not have a lot of spare time for reading so it will take a while for me to get through it.
I was flicking through the pages and came across British Ammunition boxes of that time, Now it appears the Ammunition boxes were not to blame for the short supply of ammunition getting to the firing lines. It appears that plenty of ammunition was getting to the troops it was the shear number of Zulu’s that over—whelmed the British.
See now I always thought it was down to the quartermaster and the Ammunition boxes that the battle was lost.
Anyone else got information on this.

| Companion to the Anglo- Zulu War excellent book.
The ammunition box section gives a great overview of the Mark (V) or Mark (V1) Pattern that was used.
I think Ian Knight has with out doubt put the ammunition box myth to bed. Ammunition was getting to the firing lines, “he says that a heavy blow to the outer edge of the access panel caused the one retaining brass screw to bend and the washer housing to split away from the wood”. The tool he suggests for doing this would have been a mallet that would have been used to secure tent pegs of which there would have been plenty. The butt of a rifle could also have been used.
During the 2000 archaeological exploration of the battlefield he says a number of the tin inner-linings handles, with pieces of lining panel attached, were discovered along the British firing lines above the iNyoni dongas.
He also makes a good point. “There are no surviving references to full unopened boxes being discovered on the battlefield after the event.” “Many of the boxes were opened by the British during the fighting or later by the Zulus”.
Companion to the Anglo- Zulu War is a quick reference book covering most questions relating to the AZW
