George Bell Murray held the rank of Surgeon at the time he was attached to the Royal Marine Battalion that sailed to South Africa aboard HMS Jumna for service in the Zulu War. Murray was one of two Surgeons serving under Fleet Surgeon Timotheus John Haran. The other Surgeon was Henry Thompson Cox. By the time "Jumna" arrived in South Africa on July 7, 1879 the Zulu War was winding down. The marine battalion was order wait at Simon's Bay. They finally received orders to return to England and departed Simon's Bay on July 24 for England.
