Mac’ & Shad’ records the following:
Served in the Gatling Battery R.A. in Zululand with Wood’s Flying Column, and subsequently with Clarke’s Column at the occupation of Ulundi. Commanded the Mountain Battery of the Transvaal Artillery during the Sekukuni campaign. Was present at the storming and capture of the chief’s stronghold on the 28th Nov.

Lieutenant Reginald Paynter Maitland to be Captain, vice E. F. B. Brackenbury, who retires, receiving a gratuity. Dated 23rd April, 1881.
