Hello, I am trying to find out if there was a Philip Price at the Rorkes Drift battle. His name is not on the roll call but he served in the Warwickshire regiment as carpenter I think. He came from the Brecon area and we have newspaper clipping of him in his uniform and a medal which is in the possession of a relative who I've lost touch with. I have been trying to establish if was at Rorkes Drift. The museum at Brecon think he have taken a different name to enlist at the time?

dprice

He arrived in S. Africa during the war a couple of months after Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift but did serve with his battalion in the rest of the Zulu War.  Details below.  Note the record shows 2 'L's in Phillip. Did he have perhaps a middle name beginning with G?

PRICE Phillip – Private – 25B/1655 – 1st/24th
Arrived in South Africa with draft aboard the Transport Clyde from 25th Brigade Depot Brecon, 1/3/1879.
South Africa Medal 1877-8-9 with clasp 1879.  Medal rolls give No.1655 Price G.

His name had one L in Philip according to the General Register Office in the district of Pontypool but no middle name. My late grandad though always thought his dad had indeed been involved. However, I suspect the information above is more likely to be the case. Apparently he was part of a group of soldiers who had gone out to build a bridge. Thanks for you reply.

The info comes from soldiers' docs in TNA. The General Register Office will be right about his name.
