| Good evening Ells,
I’ll make a start for you:
Commandants BENGOUGH, Harcourt Mortimer. Major, 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment BROWNE, George Hamilton, (Commandant) CHERRY, Charles Edward Le Mesurier. Captain, 32nd (Cornwall) Light Infantry COOPER, Edward Russell. (Commandant) DURNFORD, Anthony William. Brevet Colonel, Royal Engineers GRAVES, Shapland, Major, 3rd (East Kent - The Buffs) Regiment LONSDALE, Rupert La Trobe. (Commandant) MONTGOMERY, Alexander Nixon. (Commandant) NETTLETON, William John. (Commandant)
Staff Officers BARTON, Geoffry. Captain, 1st Battalion, 7th (Royal Fusiliers) Regiment HART, Arthur FitzRoy. Captain, 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment SHEPSTONE, George John Palmer. (Captain) Political Assistant
You will note I have relocated George Hamilton BROWNE, to his correct surname.
Other amendments I have made appear in italics. These include minor changes to Barton’s and Hart’s forenames - Geoffry rather than Geoffrey, and FitzRoy rather than Fitzroy.
Those officers on special service, I have added the designations of their parent units.
Shepstone is interesting only on his old school memorial have I seen the three initials to his forenames, normally he appears simply as George. His mother’s maiden name was Palmer, so that accounts for that as a given name.

| Ells,
Three more of the top of my head.
NOURSE, Temple Maynard Cracroft (Captain)
SHERVINTON, Charles Robert St. Leger. (Captain) SHERVINTON, Thomas (Lieutenant)
You had R.A. after Captain Shervinton, and R.M. after Lieutenant Shervinton. Do you have a source for those initials? R.M. could stand for Resident Magistrate.
I have just seen that the incorrect spelling of Shervington (sic.) appears in my co-authored work with David Truesdale, Victoria's Harvest. For the correct spelling see Kathleen Shervinton's work: The Shervintons: Soldiers of Fortune. Shervinton of Madagascar; Shervinton of Salvador & Tom Shervinton, N.N.C.

| John,
Thanks for your reply. The R.M. stands for Robert Munro. I appears a common fact that brothers during the times had the same forenames as Charles was also Robert. I cannot trace where I got the R.A. from at the moment but I do know Charles had no affiliation to the Royal Artillery.

| Ells,
Sorry I meant amend my reply last night, but I got waylaid with another enquiry regarding No. 2 Column, the initials R.A. actually appear with Nourse’s name.
I’ll take another look later, time permitting.
Regards,
JY

| Re The Shervintons.
William Monroe Shervinton, born 1857 served with Lonsdale's Horse, and was at the fight at Morosi's Mountain and other engagements. At Durban he unexpectedly met his eldest brother Charlie, who had just arrived there after the relief of Eshowe. He later went to New York and then to Central America. His headquarters were at San Salvador. The president there offered William the rank of Colonel. He served at the Battle of Chalchuapa fought April 2, 1885. On December 27th he died back in London at the early age of 33. |

| Thanks Wentworth, The middle name Munro for two of the brothers, I would presume that that was their mother's maiden name, something else to check.

Ells Charles Robert Shervinton 1823-1907 married Eliza Munro 1833-1914. Ancestry has lots of Shervintons. |

| Hi Ells Thanks for posting your list. I spent quite some time comparing with my list and then lost my results by failing to save it!!! I will have another go but I did note you had several names I didn’t and vice versa. My list is a combination of Roy Duttons medal roll and Terry Soles For God Queen and Country mainly but with others I have picked up from the forum, The leadership of the NNC by Keith Smith, or the internet. What other sources did you use?
One other Commandant I have, although not strictly NNC is Major Wilson’s Black 2/24th who I believe took temporary command of the 3rd NNC while Robert Lonsdale was sick. Not sure of the dates but about 9th to 19th Jan I think.
I think you’re missing a few medical officers as well but will have another comparison with my list in the next week or two and post my results.
Regards Phil |

| Hi everyone,
Thanks for this listing.
There is a good book on the Shervington brothers written, as I recall, by their sister. Includes some good photographs. I guess the South American details mentioned were derived from this book.

| Who was Captain E.J.P. Wood of the N.N.C.?
Can anybody possibly give any details?
I suspect that he was Edmund George Powys Wood a son of Colonel Herbert William Wood. Note the difference in initials. A rather sad story about a bit of a looser who, transferring from the Madras General List, was appointed as an Ensign with the 103rd Foot in 1861 and later “retired”. He was declared bankrupt after being involved with various unsavoury transactions (seemingly unbefitting of an officer) and then travelled from the England to South Africa and then to Australia.

| Norris, Arthur W. (Lieutenant) does not appear to be listed in Dutton, Forgotten Heroes of the Basuto and Zulu Wars, as having served in the NNC. Please advise your sources for my research on the Norris family.
There was an Arthur Walker Norris of suitable credentials for service, resident in Umbombo Zululand.
Stirton. J (Lieutenant) is certainly John Stirton, my great, great uncle. Brian Norris. |

| Robgdad, In regards to Captain E.J.P. Wood as this is listed in numerous sources, an observation on panel 10 of 1879Greaves post shows the signature of Edmund George Powys Wood, as you cite and to my option the G looks very much like a J, hence your assumption may be true.
