“ Richard Harmer was born in the Parish of Clifton on Teme, Worcestershire, and attested for the 60th Rifles at Worcester on 3 April 1877, aged 18 years, a labourer by trade. He transferred to the 3/60th on 20 June 1877, was appointed Lance-Corporal on 5 October 1878, promoted to Corporal on 10 May 1879, and resigned his ‘stripes’ on 4 June 1880, reverting to the rank of Private. He served overseas in South Africa from 19 February 1879 to 22 February 1882; at Malta from 23 February to 17 July 1882; and Egypt from 18 July 1882 to 26 June 1883. During this period he took part in the campaigns in Zululand in 1879, the Transvaal in 1881, and in Egypt in 1882 (South African medal and clasp 1879; Egyptian medal and clasp Tel-el-Kebir; Khedive’s Bronze Star). He joined the Army Reserve, Worcester District, on 8 July 1883, and served at the Rifle Depot from 16 May 1884 until his final discharge at Winchester on 4 April 1889.”
