"Francis Edward Brock was born in London in 1849 and enlisted there on 13 August 1870, aged 21. After initial service with the 1st 60th in Nova Scotia and at Home, Brock transferred to the 3rd 60th for service in South Africa during the Zulu war in 1879. He took part in the First Boer War when the 3/60th were present at Laing’s Nek, Ingogo River and Majuba Mountain. He served with the same battalion in Egypt and was present at the actions at Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir. Returning home in June 1883, he was discharged at Gosport on 1 July 1883."
