| Just to take our minds off of lockdown, here’s silly quiz.
Name the actor and his roles.
He would fall at Rorke’s Drift.
He had the Dickens of expectations.
He rose in the ranks and served in a different Victorian conflict.
He was thrown down a well by his jealous siblings.
Finally, in a role I actually saw him play, which is linked to the previous question, he was something of a “...Circus” performer.

| Phil,
As I mentioned there is a link between the penultimate question and the last, if you’ve got that then it comes easy.
The image of the person the actor portrayed was everywhere in my youth.

| The only one I know who had circus links is "Charlton Heston", but he wasn't in Zulu.

| Peter,
Way off the mark, Jack Hawkins did not fall - perish - at Rorke’s Drift, he might have stumbled a bit after hitting the bottle.
Phil thinks he knows the answer, but he is stumbling over the last question.
Personally I never had the tee-shirt...

| Phil, Take at look at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] where he is in full Che mode. There’s no indication in The Noble 24th as to “Old King” Cole’s previous trade or calling. JY |

| Hi 90th You have the incorrect Cole. Private Thomas Cole had been posted inside the Hospital, but he ran out of the building to join the men at the breastwork, almost as soon as he reached the breastwork the men there were immediately showered with his blood and brain tissue as a Zulu went straight through his head, and then hit Private James Bushe on the bridge of the nose, splattering his face with blood. He was with Private Hook defending the Xhosa Native when the tension and fumes, of the burning hospital became to much for him and he ran out. He attested at Monmouth on 23rd March 1876, aged 20 years and 10 months. Posted to 2nd/24th Regiment on 20 June 1876.He is mentioned in the official report by Chard and also in letters by Hook and Lyons. Served in the Kaffir War 1878. Served in the Zulu War 1879, a Private in ‘B’ Company at the defence of Rorke’s Drift. Killed in action 22nd / 23rd January 1879. During the battle he was shot through the head. No trace of a claim for his effects. Private Cole is buried in the cemetery at Rorke’s Drift and his name is inscribed on the monument. Medal for South Africa with Clasp ‘1877-8-9’. His regimental service number was 25B/801 In the film ‘Zulu’ his occupation was that of a ‘Paperhanger’, his part in the film was played by Gary Bond. His nickname was ‘Old King Cole’ |
