Maritzburg's daily newspaper, The Witness, which recently celebrated its 175th Anniversary, is providing excellent coverage of the death of the Zulu King and subsequent events. It genuinely is an independent newspaper unlike those that simply claim to be because of their company affiliation, so it has its own staff providing reports well illustrated by coloured photos, and informed opinions.
There is an online version.
A visit to Nongoma yesterday would have given the lucky person sight of enough Zulu warriors in traditional garb to conjure up visions of the 1879 Zulu War.

I would have jumped on a plane and been over there with you Tim.
Seems his legacy will be his fight against Aids and the revival of certain customs such as male circumcision. I watched Buthelezi's speech (crumbs he's looking frail), as I thought he would mention iSandlwana. I see Ramamphosa's prot. team had to remove the fences and make a dramatic escape from the amabutho. A case of Ramaphosa on his own Fugitives Trail me thinks. One of the broadcasters stated there were discussions in the Royal Household as to who will be the next King? I bet they are interesting!!! Is that the rattle of sticks I hear? Kate

Yes there was a lovely bit mentioned somewhere that the amaButho were making noises like bees around the fencing (sound familiar?) - amazing scenes of national grief that I can only compare to Princess Di - God willing we will be out there again at some point in the future - be safe

To put Ramaphosa's 'escape' into perspective. The Zulu regiment's were banned from entering the compound by the police because of Covid regulations in terms of maximum people attending a gathering. They took exception to that and charged the gate to try and force their way in. So the demo was not anti Ramaphosa rather the abrogation of the amabuthu's rights to pay homage. Just saying.

The King has appointed Queen Mantfombi MaDlamini Zulu to be interim leader. Life in Zululand is going to be interesting for the next few months !

Frank,
Having worked with Queen Mantfombi in the U.K., I can say that she has a keen interest in both the Zulu & Swazi history.
I’ll drop you an e-mail that will please you.
