Might be fun to see if we can pin this chap down (if it is a Zulu War Medal he wears). He certainly sports a fine pair of moustaches [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Not being great with technology, I tried to copy the picture but e-bay won't let me. If anyone knows how to do it, it might be good to have his image on here for when the advert eventually goes. Kate

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]2 x Interesting Matt Photographic Postcard of a fine Victorian Soldier. He appears to be wearing a South Africa 1877-79 Zulu War Medal, with what appears to be a "Year" Clasp, although experts please advise if not. One card is signed. I thought it was possibly from "R A Morton" but other suggestions are very welcome. The card came from a Sheffield collection. The key female members of his family are shown on the 2nd card, seemingly slightly more formidable than any Tribesmen he might have encountered. Are we allowed to say Tribesmen? Perhaps Tribes-persons, as Rorke's Drift was clearly an equal-opportunities conflict. Andy

I had a quick flick through Dutton's last night looking for Morton's in the Imperial section and came up with these possibles. but none have the same initials. Though I don't think its R.A. It could be N.A. If you look at the letter 'n' in new year, its the same shape as his first initial. N. A. perhaps? G.D Morton 1/13th p227 A. Morton 2/24th p263 T. Morton ASC p356 S. Morton RA p366 T. Morton RA p366 JY any thoughts re his uniform? Kate

| Kate,
It is some form of patrol jacket, but having that there is nothing indicate that it is that of a military unit. Civilian organisations, authorities and associations of the period obviously wore similar items of clothing, so no clues in the photograph as to his previous unit.

Looking at the way he writes his 'a's starting at the bottom and ending at the bottom and then his 'o's which start at the top and end at the top I would say it is definitely an 'O' Look at the 'o' in 'for' and then the second letter of his surname. Kate

I ended up winning this auction. I'd say another possible ID may be a Private R. Moreton of the 2/24th. I'm absolutely terrible w cursive though.
