| Frank,
The project to dam to the Mzinyathi River at/or near Fugitives’ Drift was proposed in 2003. It resurrected a previous dismissed proposal. It would have flooded parts of the Fugitives’ Trail. Fortunately like most projects that encroach on the battlefield it never came to fruition.

| Morning John I recall the concept was to build a dam below the Gorge and back flood the valley above the Bashe confluence. The memories a bit vague but I seem to remember one of the factors against it, and there were many, was the Ibris colony in the cliff face alongside the Mzinyathi. The video however appears to suggest a flooding of the battlefield.

| Frank,
As far as I can recall we put that in as of a sad epitaph for what had happened there, and what might happen there. This dates from when the dam project was first proposed in 1996. It was something of a cry of protest put across so well by the late John Hurt.

| Not sure if you remember John but when we were at the High Commissioners residence in July 2019 the late King Zwelitini gave a speech and talked of the dam and flooding parts of the border country as one of the projects he needed to raise money for. Not sure if any of the British business men there actually put their hands in their pockets and offered up any cash though. Kate |
