Has anyone done any research into the Temperance Movement during the Zulu War?
I found this in the Belfast Witness, Friday 14th March 1879:-
"It is stated that an entire Good Templar Lodge connected with the 24th Regiment perished at the fight of Isandula. The Lodge was called the British Pioneers. There are lodges in the 60th Rifles, the 58th and 91st Regiments"
Not Free Masons as corrected below. Kate

Kate,
Good Templars were not Freemasons, they were a temperance society, those who had taken the pledge to abstain from the demon drink.
As to Freemasons both Melvill & Coghill were certainly Masons, do a search as I think this has previously discussed.

Kate,
I think Emery lists the names of some Good Templars killed at iSandlwana in The Red Soldier.

Not quite temperance but akin to it - I recently bought a medallion which is dated 1873 / 1875 as it goes with a Manual I have of the Army Guild of the Holy Standard and St Helena - a voluntary organisation for supporting Anglican Communicant military padres in the Victorian Army. The “Guild brothers of the Holy Standard pledged themselves to support one another and to set a Christian example “to be sober, upright and chaste; to be regular in their private prayers; to receive the Holy Communion at least three times a year; to avoid immoral books, to pray for other people, help the chaplains and promote the religious and social welfare of soldiers and their families" So what's this got to do with the AZW well one of the chapels supported by them was St Vincent's at iSandlwana and there is a memorial list of fallen Brethren there from the battle

Tim,
The memorial you mention from St Vincent's Church has the following inscription:
IN MEMORY OF SIX BRETHREN OF THE GUILD OF THE HOLY STANDARD WHO FELL IN BATTLE AT ISANDHLWANA 22 AND 23 JANUARY 1879
CAPTAIN F.B. RUSSELL RA PRIVATES J. FAIRCLOTH, J. HOLLAND, N. KEMPSHALL, W. THEOBALD AND G. TODD 24TH REGIMENT S.W.B.
MAY THEY REST IN PEACE
Unfortunately the plaque seems to have been removed from the church some years ago, and I'm led to believe that it turned up at a militaria fair in the UK in 2019.
Regards,
Tim
