| Kate,
That should be Norman Magnus MacLeod of MacLeod, Magnus is his second given name, rather than his surname.
He was the 26th Clan Chief of the Clan MacLeod, born 27th July 1839 - died 5th November 1929.
I have visited Dunvegan Castle, the family seat in Scotland, there’s nice portrait of him there, but it is one of these family homes where photography is prohibited.
I think Ron Lock may have used an illustration of his predecessor as Clan Chief in Blood on the Painted Mountain.
I have quite a bit on the family links to some other Zulu War participants, Fairlie & Hay spring to mind.

| Hello Kate,
From memory he took part in a skirmish whilst serving with Fairlie’s Native Police, whilst they formed part of No. 5 Column.
I know he was most influential in Hamu’s defection.
I still can’t check my data at present. Can I suggest a look at The Boiling Cauldron for a better answer.

| Quite a bit in here about him. Page 167/8 gives some background. Apparently Chelmsford appointed him as Wood's civil and political assistant for the Utrecht district and the Swazi border. W.F. and R.N. Fairlie were cousins So yes in answer to my original question he was |
