| Hi All, Real Name Henry Glasson born St James Dublin 1861/1864 [the newspaper age makes him born 1861, but on all four enlistment papers he is born 1864. These confirm his Army History, Dublin Fusiliers pre 1887, East Lancs 1887 to 1899, Royal Garrison Regt 1901 to 1903, Scottish Rifles 1903 to 1909, Black Watch 10 sept 1914 [lied about age to enlist], to 1916, 462 employment company 1917 to 1919. So not Zulu War. One last thing, Tried Field General Court Martial, sentenced to 5 years penal servitude for when on active service shamefully casting away his arms in the presence of the enemy 22 Dec 1914, commuted 6 Jan 1915 to 1 year, Prison Rouen, released under the suspension of service act 1915 rejoined his battalion 15 June 1915. Obviously before the days of Execution. Do not know much on WW1 any ideas what was happening to the Black Watch in December 1914. Rai Keynshamlighthorse. |

| Hi, This is my Great-great- grandfather. I was led to believe that he had served in the Zulu campaign, although as stated, there are no records to commute this; that being said I think he possibly may have enlisted as a boy soldier as H Glass. His records are indicative of a fairly rogue individual, with sentences for assault in civil court during his time with the East Lancs, as well as numerous cases of VD in his medical records. With regards to his sentence for shamefully casting away his arms in the presence of the enemy, I think that his age probably saved his life in this instance as well as the medical record that he was sent home in 1914 with a bad case of diphtheria, before returning to the trenches in 1915. From my own research the Black Watch were engaged in fierce fighting when the incident occurred and I can only assume that he had some sort of epiphany and had simply had enough of war, he was in his 50s at this point. |
