Newport Veteran Dead
Sergeant Major William English, of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers ( in charge of the Volunteer battalion), died at his residence 16 Hill Street, Newport on Sunday morning. He had been ill for several weeks.
IT GOES ON TO SAY:
In all he had had upwards of 30 years military service. He served in the Zulu war with the old 41st Regiment - The South Wales Borderers and was well known throughout Monmouthshire and South Wales. He was 46 years of age and leaves a Widow and child.

Enlisted at Chatham, Kent 5th October 1877; age 18 years. Deserted at King William’s Town, Eastern Cape 6th August 1878. Rejoined 15th October 1878. South Africa Medal with Clasp 1877-8-9; no trace of issue of medal. His regimental service number was 25B/1439.

Natal Witness 12th October 1878 A deserter from the 2-24th Regt. named William English has given himself up at Graff-Reinet. He had found his way from Kingwilliamstown to the Midland Railway Works but got tired and, concluded to surrender and take his punishment.

I believe he ended his career with the 2nd volunteer battalion SWB at Newport, South Wales.
