One for the 24th experts on here. I can't find a John Little in the 24th in Holme's

25B/2049? Was 46B/888 transferred to 24th Regt February 1879 one of the replacements.

McMILLAN John – Private – 25B/2049 – 1st/24th
Service details: Arrived in South Africa with draft aboard the Transport Clyde from 50th Foot 46th Brigade Depot Maidstone, Kent 1/3/1879. Served in the Zulu War 1879.
Honours/awards: South Africa Medal with clasp 1879.

Thanks to Graves report, Little was McMillan...but why should he change his name to McMillan in the transfer from one regt to another?

Real name John Little died at Broxburn 17.7.1939.

He was McMillan from the beginning of his service in the 50th, as written in their pay-list WO 16/1800 Oct 78- Mar 79. From Grave's article it seems he was trying to hide his name from his mother. His service record as posted by Graves shows he had written his name on the first occurrence then crossed it out when he realised his error and substituted McMillan.

Actually I note that in all instances in his service papers his name is recorded not as McMillan but as McMillian - a one in a milliAn surname!
