| Kate,
An interesting pair of medals. A photograph of the engraving on medal’s edge would be helpful. I found a third medal of his that was auctioned 20 September 2002. “China 1857-60, 1 clasp, Taku Forts 1860 (G. C. White Day, Boy 1 Cl., H.M.S. Centaur)”
I have not been able to find a Royal Navy service record for this man. His name does not appear on the medal roll of HMS Shah for the South Africa Medal, nor does his name appear on the medal roll of HMS Active for the Ashantee Medal.
This one will definitely take some more investigating.

| One thing I failed to mention regarding his China medal is that the description of the medal showed that it was "renamed." I would like to know if that is the case with the Ashantee and South Africa medals.

| 90th got in touch with the auction house and they sent him these photos of the edges showing the inscriptiions [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]This from Petty Officer Tom in response to seeing the photos The South Africa Medal to HMS Shah is not engraved in the style of the medals issued in 1880 and 1881. Below is the engraving style for "Shah". ”SHAH” W.J. ARSCOTT A.B. H·M·S If this is not a fake medal it would have to be a duplicate issued at a later date. |

| Kate,
Forum member Justin of Jager Medals has had a look at the photos and says "They are both 100% renamed"

| Today I checked on the pair of medals to G.C. White Day. The site that was selling them has withdrawn the lot from the auction.
