| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Maj.-Gen. Sir Ronald Bertram Lane was born on 19 February 1847 at King's Bromley Manor, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of John Newton Lane and Hon. Agnes Bagot.1 He married Augusta Sarah Beaumont in 1893. He died on 7 March 1937 at age 90 at Carleton Hall, Saxmundham, Suffolk, England. He was commissioned in 1867 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the Rifle Brigade. He fought in the Zulu War between 1878 and 1879. He fought in the First Boer War in 1881. He was Aide-de-Camp to the Duke of Connaught in 1882. He was Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief, Duke of Cambridge. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]"Caricature of Major-General Sir Ronald Bertram Lane. Caption read "Rowdy". Accompanying biographical note in Vanity Fair read "Of his coolness and humour those who were in the Zulu War have still a story to tell. A certain war correspondent of assurance and reputation had declared that if the Zulus were crushed, that they would not fight again. Lane held a contrary opinion, and a bet of a tenner was the result. The battle of Ulundi followed. The firing had been a trifle wild. The Zulus were within two hundred yards and coming on fast. An order was given to resume volley firing. In the few seconds pause Lane was heard to call out cheerily to the correspondent, 'I say, ...., as we don't seem likely to get out of this square, I'll trouble you to hand over that tenner now'.... He is now Lieutenant-Governor of the Chelsea Hospital and his old friends still call him 'Rowdy Lane'".

| "Lane was born on the 19th of February 1847, the youngest son and 10th child of John Newton Lane of King's Bromley Manor, Litchfield. Through his father, he was a descendant of the Lane family of Bentley Hall (later of Kings Bromley) one of whom was Jane Lane, the English Civil War heroine. Lane was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1867.[2] He was appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster-General in Natal in 1891, Aide-de-Camp to the Duke of Connaught as Commander of the Guards' Brigade in Egypt in 1882 and Assistant Military Secretary in Canada in 1883. He went on to be Assistant Military Secretary at Headquarters in 1892, Aide-de-camp to the Duke of Cambridge as Commander-in-Chief in 1889 and Commander of the Garrison at Alexandria in 1898. His last appointments were as Commander of the Infantry Brigade at Malta in 1901, Military Secretary at Headquarters in 1903 and Lieutenant-Governor and Secretary of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in 1905 before retiring in 1909. In retirement he became Chairman of the Southern Alberta Land Company in Canada.[4] He died at Carlton Hall in Saxmundham.
In 1893 he married Augusta Sarah Beaumont, daughter of John Augustus Beaumont, developer of Wimbledon Park. Their only child, Captain George Ronald Lane was in the Coldstream Guards and fell in action on the Somme in 1916" |
