James Arkell was born in Gloucester, Gloucestershire. He enlisted at Deptford on 14th October 1870, aged 23 years. He was five feet five and three quarters of an inch tall. His complexion was fresh, his eyes brown and his hair dark brown. His Religion was Church of England and his trade that of a labourer. He joined the Regiment at Belfast on 22nd October 1870. He was discharged by purchase on 8th March 1881. His service number was 1437.
