In this account Talyor is right about the first use of gatling guns being in SA but his dates are wrong. Coker used his in January 22nd 1879 at Nyezane, Roberts took two in his march to Kandahar in 1880

It was Able Seaman Charles Taylor who the newspaper article was written about. Plumber Charles Taylor deserted ship at Simon’s Bay in 1881. What I found the most interesting was that Taylor named Midshipman, The Honorable, Stanley Colville as being in charge of the “Boadicea’s” gatling which was positioned on the Northeast corner of the square at Gingindlovo.

Charles Taylor RN, his Probate gives died 3 Jan 1939 address 32 Elliston St, Cleethorpes, to Frederick Charles Taylor and Elizabeth Hinchcliff. He was buried on 5 Jan 1939 in Cleethorpes Cemetery age 82.
