Tom Martin was an Able Seaman belonging to HMS Shah during the Zulu War. He served ashore as part of the Naval Brigade. His name is confirmed on the medal roll as entitled to the South Africa Medal with the "1879" clasp.

The Huascar was a Peruvian Ironclad ship , not part of the British Navy , it had a run in with HMS Shah where they exchanged fire from memory , somewhere in the Pacific ? .

Hi All,
Not much to add, on the 1911 census he is a plumber living 52 Avenue Road Lewisham, b.1857 Sherborne, married to Priscilla and 3 children. the 1939 list gives his address as Nunhead Southwark born 20 Aug 1857, he is now a widow, Probably dies Dec Qtr 1940 in Lewisham District.
