| One for you Andy There is a sergeant 1574 F G Style, a private 753 E Styles and a 1971 J Style in the 17th Lancers all with 1879 clasps. This article could mention two AZW Lancers as it mentions his brother and his initials meaning this could be 753. | Hi All, Interesting this one, and difficult but finally sorted Frederick George 17 Lcrs No. 1574 and John Lounds Style 17 Lcrs No.1971 were cousins their fathers were brothers. Frederick George born Melcombe Regis, weymouth Dorset 1847. By the 1851 census the family were living in Bath as Coachbuilders. Attested 17Lcrs 8 Aug 1874, discharged 7 Aug 1886 12 yrs served as Sgt in Zulu War. 1901 census Taunton he is a widower employed as a Coachbuilder [this was the family trade dating back to 1841]. 1911 census St John Sreet, Bath he is a Tobacconist. Dying in Bath in 1913. John Lounds Style 17 Lcrs, attested 11 Dec 1876, baptised 8 July 1859 in Melcombe Regis, his father Thomas was also in the Family Buisness of Coachbuilding, to 17th Lcrs 12 Dec 1876, to S Africa 26 Feb 1879 Natal 6 April 1879, Zulu War, 17 Oct 79 to India arriving 11 Nov 1879, his papers now read resigned giving the dates 30 Nov 1880 to 30 June 1881, then they state continued Private from 1 July 1881 until he is discharged at Gosport 31 Jan 1889, 12 yrs the one year absence has been deducted from his total service. There is also a 1924 Royal Hospital pension stamp, so i presume he was still alive about this date, the only records i find are Electoral rolls for Durham from 1923 to 1928 then a probate record for a John Style dying 19 Nov 1929 in Southampton. | Well done Rai Can I jsut say a big thank you for all the work you have done over the last few months in adding additional details to these individuals. Though not acknowledged it doesn't go unnoticed and I'm sure all of your hard work will be of great use to those researching the period in the future as well as family members trying to track down their AZW ancestors. Well done and I look forward to reading more of your geneology discoveries. Kate |
