Hi all
In the museum at Brecon is a mug presented to Sergeant George & Magaret Cambers, George having died at Isandlwana. on it is inscribed 1/L Company. I am aware that he was an instructor of musketry, but does the "L" signify Training Company? Margaret being the sister of Lewis, Rorke's Drift Defender.

Afternoon,
Indeed Eddie,
J, K, L, & M were the designations of the Depot Companies of both Battalions. I believe J & K for 1/24th and L & M for 2/24th.

Hi Bill8183
Thank you so much. I just have another question, it is said that Sergeant Chambers was an Instructor of Musketry in 1/24th, wouldn't that mean he would come under J&K and not L, as inscribed on the mugs?

Evening,
The then Sgt. Chambers was at the Depot 25th Brigade from it's formation until October 1877. He was made C/Sgt in 1874. It would not be unusual to suppose he was in charge of a training Company that was technically a different Battalion, he was there to instruct men of the Regiment as a whole in any case. So it's more than plausible there was a bit of cross posting.

Thank you
I thought I should clarify as I was thinking along the same lines myself.
