I have seen the debate about Wales, the Welsh and the Zulu War in another place.

Here’s one man of Welsh birth, Welsh parentage and heritage who - in my opinion - should not have been anywhere near South Africa, let alone KwaZulu in January 1879.

Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere was born in Clydach House, Clydach, Breconshire on 29th March 1815. His mother was the eldest daughter and co-heiress of James Greene of Llansanfraed, Monmouthshire. She in turn was descended from the Brigstocks of Blaenpant, who were descended from no less than twelve Welsh Princes, numbered among her ancestors was Cadogan, Grah of Carog, who long heroically resisted English invasion, and took Cardigan Castle by assault from the Earl of Clare in 1133, and Katherine, his wife, was the daughter of Rhys Vawr, Prince of South Wales.
