| Natal Witness 4th September 1880 Corporal Archer and Trooper Sawyer of the Weatherly's Horse are wanted. Those who know anything of them are expected to communicate with Commandant Dennison, Wolhuter's Kop, near Rustenburg. AZW medal rolls show a Corporal Archer J. 1879 clasp returned Trooper Sawyer L. 1879 clasp returned More details can be found here of Archer [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

| Just seen this post ... very interesting to me thanks for posting. Very likely that this is the same Cpl John (Jack) Archer mentioned in the link you gave and also some discussion on this page: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]He had a close association with Dennison in both the Zulu War and the ABW. In fact one of his sons was named John Dennison Archer. So one wonders in what connection were he and Sawyer "wanted"... There is a possibly unrelated entry in the National Archives (PMB) dated 1881 REFERENCE AGO122A/1881 PART 1 DESCRIPTION TELEGRAMS FROM THE RESIDENT MAGISTRATE, NEWCASTLE RE ESCAPED PRISONERS JW ARCHER AND A LAMBERT. Also what does it mean on the medal role - "returned"? |

I'm away from home right now, so can't look anything up, but I would guess that Dennison was gathering men to build a force against the Boers in what was to be the first ABW (December 1880). I know that Archer was with Dennison during that period. There is a story of the men having a good laugh because Archer returned from a skirmish with a bullet hole through his hat. |
