| Interestingly, Pte. Edward D. McToy in his work on the 1st/13th P.A.L.I. lists the following: 60th Rifles - Pack, W. - Wounded 29/10/78, died from effects.
There are some further variations in his casualty return relating this action.

| Kate,
Given that the 3rd Battalion, 60th Rifles were still in the U.K., you might be considering the wrong battalion. He could be an odd man from any of the four battalions of the 60th.
Assuming Pack was indeed from the 60th he might have a soldier-servant to a 60th officer serving in the Transvaal in 1878, someone such as Buller.

| Hi John Was aware the 3/60th wasn't there but he still may have been 3/60th but just on secondment to SA say as Buller's servant. Think I've cracked it though. Check this out [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Natal Witness 26th November 1878 |

| Kate,
Which all seems to confirm my assumption.
I imagine the reason McToy includes Pack in his casualty return was that Pack was being carried on the books of the 1st/13th P.A.L.I.

| Hi JY If our man Pack was on the books of the 1/13th would that also mean he was on their Roll ? , I checked the 1/13th Rolls no mention of him. 90th |

| Gary,
No it would only have been pay & muster purposes as attached personnel, in whichever battalion of the 60th was his parent unit there should have been an entry showing him as detached.
