| Hi all
I also found in the Natal Witness BMDs 1879, this person was KIA ISANDLWANA but the surname is illegible:
KIA Isandlwana 22Jan 1879, Herbert J (surname illegible) son of W J (surname illegible).
Also:
After two days illness Lieut J P (surname illegible), Woods Irregulars, late of Gordon's Chinese Contingent. Date of death 11Aug 1879. |

| Eddie I reckon that would be Trpr. Herbert John William Dickinson, Natal Carbineers. |

| Hi Eddie The Woods Irregulars officer might be Lt & Adjt James MacMahon (1st Bn Woods Irregulars). Sole records that he died shortly after 22.7.1879 on his way the Utrecht where the Corps was to be disbanded.
The only other with an initial J is Lt John Mulligan (2nd Bn) but no indication he died in service.
Regards Phil |

| I have a history of the campaign and some officers are named - certainly not all. I'll have a look. |

| John nothing in the index and I've skim-read the relevant chapters re recruitment of Europeans and the engagements and found nothing similar. Those he made officers of the EVA were former ORs and NCOs from the British Army and the odd American. |

| Purely out of interest, a month or two ago I was in Cambridge and picked up a dusty old book from the top shelf about Martyred Missionaries during the Boxer Rising - the interesting thing was it was done along the lines of Mac and Shad with each missionary's bio, photo done in blocks by mission. I didn't buy it but it is downloadable if anyone is interested on https://missiology.org.uk/pdf/e-books/broomhall-m/martyred-missionaries_broomhall.pdf The connexion to this thread is thin at best but it was a fascinating read.
