Major Graves and the white feather

Natal Witness 11th March and 13th March 1879
Initially after a quick scan through these articles reports could look as if they are referring to Alan however they actually refer to a Major Graves down at the coast.
He was never in command of a native contingent.

This second report above was instigated by a letter form Col. W. Bellairs D.A.G. which can be found on page 121 of the Red Book.
Incidently Major Graves fought the charge of cowerdice in August 1879 and won.

Sorry am I missing something with your comment above about never in command of a native contingent?

Major Shapland Graves, 2nd Battalion, 3rd (East Kent) - The Buffs Regiment, was the Commandant of the 2nd Regiment, Natal Native Contingent. Mentioned in Pearson’s despatches regarding the Battle of Nyezane.

Meant Alan was never in command of a native contingent.
