| I would very much appreciate some advice from the experts please! I have just joined the forum as I have come across a George William Revell on my family tree. He married my great grandmother’s sister and is therefore my great grand uncle. I thought no more of this until I found a British Newspaper Archive Obituary which said the following, “Zulu War Survivor’s Death. Mr George William Revell of ?(can’t see this) Street, Deal, one of the last living survivors of the Zulu War, has died, aged 74.” These are the details of my relative: Born and Christened 1859 in Dover, Kent. Died 1934, also in east Kent - Registration District of Eastry. Wife: Emma nee Cox. Married 11 May 1884 in Sandwich, Kent. They had a large family. Can anyone tell me whether this is the George William Revell mentioned in the obituary? I realise that there may be several people of this name, but do the details fit? Thank you for any help you can give. My late husband had a great interest in the Zulu Wars, which is why I am enquiring. |

| Thank you for this very clear copy showing the name of the street where George William Revell lived, which I couldn’t see on the record I found. Much appreciated. |

| I have had a look through the medal rolls for the Zulu War but cannot see a G W Revell. One of our members of the forum has the rolls digitised and he might be able to help you. John Young are you about? K |

| Kate,
Only just…
Sclarke,
I take it the name was Anglicised at some stage? On my files as Private G. Revello, 2nd Battalion, 3rd (East Kent) Regiment “The Buffs”. Appears in another source as ‘Ravello, G.’ 45th Brigade/1148.

He Dies 1934 in Deal Kent. No 1881 census so quiet likely in the military Rai KLH |

| sclarke If it is Revello here is a little AZW history about the regiment in which he served
The 2nd Buffs served with Col. Pearsons No1 column on the coast and assisted in the construction of Fort Tenedos and Pearson. The regiment distinguished itself in the fighting at Inyezane on the 22nd January 1879 (this was a British victory, unlike the defeat at iSandlwana which occurred further inland on the same day). Six companies were besieged at Eshowe and there were two in the relief column who were present at the battle of Gingindhlovu on the 2nd April 1879. Kate |
