Hi All

The North Wales Express 29th August 1879

Letter from Zululand:- Mr Robert Hughes, 4, Little Crown street, has favoured us with a copy of a letter received by him from his son, Private Robert Hughes, who is taking an active part in the Zulu campaign.
Writing from " The camp, Zululand" on Sunday, July 6th, Hughes states :- The war is not over yet. We have had an engagement which lasted for two hours. The number killed on our side was 8, and there were 30 wounded.
On the enemy's side the loss was 1500 killed, but the number of those wounded is unknown.
I have gone through a deal of hardship since I left home.
When the Zulus take any of our men prisoners, they treat them in the most cruel and barbarous manner.
The battle with the Zulus came off on the 4th July, when we burnt down the king's Kraals.
Richard Owen and William Evans remember to their friends at Carnarvon. This soldier is a member of the
1st battalion of the 24th regiment.

As far as is known the Zulu's only ever took one Prisoner.... Ernest Grandier of the Border Horse at Hlobane , he managed to escape by killing one of the zulus escorting him , the other ran away ! , although King Ceteswayo said they were taking him back toward the british camp at Kambula , it all depends on who you read .

Hi 90th

Yes, as far as we know, Granier is the only prisoner mentioned in private letters or publications. He was probably referring or implying it happened at Isandlwana.

Given the date of the letter, I rather think he is referring to those suspected to have being taken alive during the reconnaissance of 3rd July 1879.

Or possibly he had been one of the burial party at Isandhlwana and had witnessed the state of the bodies?
