Hi,

Somewhere, I have read that unmarried Zulu warriors had a fad in the 1870s to shape their hair into weird styles and plaster it with red clay.

I have found engraving of the hairstyles but am unable to find the reference to the red clay/ochre colour.

Has anyone got any references to hand?

Thank you very much.

Hi Sime
Ive just finished watching the new Shaka series on TV and the startling thing about it was the variety of intricate shaped hair styles. Pretty much a culture shock.

Cheers

Hiya Frank

How's things?

I've seen a number of engravings of Zulu hairstyles from the time of the AZW - particularly (exclusively?) the younger warriors.

Apparently a lot of modern ladies 'do's' are derived from historical African styles - bantu braids bring one.

Being folliculy challenged, its not something I know much about.

As part if a modelling project I painted some figures (with strange coifuers) reddish brown but I can't find the source now - there would have definitely have been a reference to it in one of my books (I'm pretty strict about accuracy)....nothing to worry about, just idle musings.

Have you got anymore books planned?

Cheers

Sime

The old style close cropped hair style that most raw recruits got, we used to call it a short back n bald.

Most depictions of zulu hair do's I have seen, nearly always appear to show it in a ring around the top of the head, and it does appear to be plastered down with some sort of clay.

Maybe the zulus invented a sort of super glue and did not realise it at the time. Very Happy
