Hi All,

Does anyone know if the cemetery at The Royal Herbert Military Hospital, Shooters Hill, London, still exists? The hospital itself has now been changed into a block of apartments but I'm trying to find out what happened to the cemetery when these alterations took place.

Cheers

Bookworm. I have just spoken to a friend of mine who has lived in Woolwich all his life. He remembers the Hospital, when it was empty, and used to play in and around the area. But he cannot remember seeing a cemetery. So he is saying if there was one it wasn’t there when he was a kid. 57 years ago. I have looked on Google Earth and found the building but cannot see any signs of a cemetery. (ie) headstones ect.

I will keep looking.

Hi Mr G,

Thanks for trying, I read recently that one of the occupiers had walked around "the cemetery where the soldiers who died at the Royal Herbert were buried" so my next question would be........ is there a cemetery local to the vicinity of the Royal Herbert?

Cheers
Bookworm.

Hi, there was no cemetery at the Herbert Hospital, Greenwich Cemetery has a huge military plot covering all periods and is well worth a visit, it is also the nearest cemetery to shooters hill, it is in Well Hall Road [A208], also nearby are Charlton Cemetery, Woolwich New and Old Cemeteries and PLumstead Cemetery all have Military Graves and all have veterns from the Zulu War within.
