Cpl. Christian Ferdinand Schiess (Natal Native Contingent). Some say. Because of his ill-fitting boots, he found himself in the hospital at Rorke's Drift. But there is another story to how he received his wound. Some say at the during the British army attacked Sihayo’s kraal.

As for the rest most had some form of fever.

Three of Reynolds's patients were casualties from the first clash with the Zulus at Sokhexe, wounded in the assault on Sihayo's Kraal. The others, some eighteen or so were members of the Column who were suffering from various ills and injuries.

The Zulus suffered 30 dead & 4 wounded and 10 were captured.

On the British side, two of the Natal Native Contingent were killed and twelve wounded, while one officer and two N.C.O.s had been wounded. The latter were taken back to the hospital at Rorke's Drift along with two badly wounded Zulus.

Just out of interest it was here that Lieut Coghill fell from his horse and wrenched his knee in an attempt to catch a fowl for Chelmsford's diiner but was able to remain with the column.

Just think - what would have happened had Coghill been at RD due to his injury , would he have stayed to help the defence ? In fact , would he have been superior to Chard and thus been in comand ?

It was Bromheads commard. But it would have been down to who got their commission first. Good point though. But he still would have had an injured knee.

Chard was senior to Bromhead as major Spalding checked in the army list before he left . We are surmising what would have happened , though , had Coghill been forced to stay at RD due to his injury.
