Can anyone verify he was in the Zulu War possibly died during the Siege of Eshowe
9 July 1879 .. DEATH IN ZULULAND - We regret to hear that Richard OLIVER, son of Mr OLIVER who was for many years connected with the Ventnor Coastguard Station — has succumbed to fever whilst serving with the Naval Brigade in the Zulu War. Deceased was about 19 years of age and since he had been in the Navy, had borne an excellent character. Much sympathy is felt with Mr OLIVER by those who know him, as it is not very long since his eldest son William, who was at Mr NICHOLSON’s establishment in this town, died rather suddenly. Mr OLIVER is now the Officer-in-Charge at Marshwood near Southampton.(IW Advertiser, Ryde & Ventnor Times) *

John,
Able Seaman Richard Oliver died at Fort Pearson on June 12, 1879, probably of fever. He was a member of HMS Shah's brigade which was involved in the relief of Eshowe. During the second phase of the war the Naval Brigade was attached to Crealock's costal column. While preparing for the invasion half of the Naval Brigade was at Fort Pearson and the other half at Fort Chelmsford (near the battle field at Gingindlovu). There were many soldier and sailors who came done with fever at Fort Chelmsford and were brought back to the field hospital at Ft. Pearson.
In his diary, Chief Petty Officer Henry Eason of HMS Shah, recorded: "Next I heard of Symonds, the Cooper's death at the Tugela and Shepherd and Oliver. The latter had been a messmate of mine. He was a strong young fellow of about 20 years and would have grown into a robust man. While on our mess he had an accident. He fell down a hatchway and put his collar bone out."
